Comment or Reply?
Or Should You Start A New Discussion...

FORUMS 101

Lesson #2

Know when to start a New Discussion and When to Comment or Reply.

Understanding the difference between Discussions and Comments is VERY important. It confuses new people and irritates regular users when you see 20 different Discussions and sometimes in different categories on the same topic. It's easy to know if you follow the following...

WHEN TO USE A COMMENT or REPLY: This one is easy, when reading a discussion that has been started by another member, if you want to add your two cents, you have two ways of doing so.A.

  1. REPLY: If you want to comment on something a particular member has said in one of the discussions, then click on "Reply". Before where you will write your message it will say "on Oct. 28th, Rick Stanton wrote..." and a copy of their post will follow. You then type in your comment. This is so other reader's can easily reference what you write to what the other person wrote and make it easy to see what you are basing your comments on.
  2. COMMENT: When you want to add to the discussion but are not directly reply to anyone's comments, click "Comment". This is where you are just adding your two cents or maybe some new information.

WHEN NOT TO COMMENT or REPLY IN A DISCUSSION: This is easy too... If your comment or reply is on a different subject than the one listed as the topic or discussion, don't do it. Go find the proper forum to start a discussion or a discussion where someone else who has already brought up the topic about what you would like to discuss.

WHEN TO START or NOT TO START A NEW DISCUSSION: It makes it really hard and inefficient when you have 10 different discussions going on in the same forum about basically the same topic. What's worse is when the topic spans different forums. Sometimes there is no way around it, maybe the road conditions will be discussed among people who launch boats and also in the CECC forum by members who just drive autos and do not have the same concerns as the boaters. Bottom line is just take a look around, especially in the same forum to see if your topic is already being discussed.

If there appears to be a need for a new forum or enough members ask, we can always add a new forum to address particular interests... May a "Parents with small children" or "Members with Pets" forum for example.
